Michael Woodcock at Harris Art Gallery in La Verne on February 1, 2011

I have not had the opportunity to meet the Claremont artist Michael Woodcock, yet, but I like his lithographs and I’ve heard two great art related stories about him.

The first story is that when he was teaching at Pitzer College, he decided he wanted to bring some of the downtown LA art scene to Claremont so he called John Baldessari, who he did not know, and asked him if he’d do a show at the Pitzer College gallery. I use the word “gallery” loosely because I don’t think they’d had many serious shows up to that point. I love his chutzpah for that.

The other story goes that when Michael Woodcock was at Pitzer, he taught a road trip class to Roden Crater. That means the whole class got in cars & took a road trip to Arizona to check out some in-process James Turrell art and experience the car culture of the West. Love it.

It’s not in Claremont, I know, but you should visit Harris Gallery at University of La Verne on February 1 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm to see Michael Woodcock’s latest paintings and to support someone who has been an influence, in so many ways, on the art experience in Claremont. The show runs through March 4, 2011. See you there.
